[Podcast] Holistic Strategies for Dealing with Our Mental Health Crisis

8/18/2024

Holistic mental health
Obviously, we talk a lot about health on this blog, but our mental health is inextricably linked to our physical health. In fact, it's impossible to address one without looking at the other.

In this week's post, I'm sharing a eye-opening episode of The Doctor's Farmacy, where Functional Medicine doctor, Mark Hyman, sits down with Dr. Jaquel Patterson, a naturopathic physician and expert in integrative psychiatry, to discuss the hidden root causes of brain inflammation that can lead to poor mental health. Many of these causes start in the gut or other bodily systems, and over time, they can begin to impact our brain health in negative ways.

This is just one more reason why we need to be addressing our health as a holistic system, rather than just managing symptoms on a piecemeal basis! Tune in to this fascinating episode below to learn how your health impacts your brain, and how to manage our mental and physical health in a more holistic way in order to achieve better overall long-term health.

[Podcast] How to Fix Your Busted Metabolism: A Deep Dive into Functional Medicine and Metabolic Health

6/9/2024

Metabolic health podcast
One of the reasons I became so interested in Functional Medicine is that it is, as Dr. Mark Hyman says, "the medicine of asking why". Rather than simply evaluating a symptom and throwing some pills at it, Functional Medicine takes a curious approach and seeks to find out WHY you're having the symptom, so that it can be addressed at the root level.

This is one thing that I've found so frustrating in my own health journey, as I've started taking steps to begin addressing my chronic acid reflux. The conventional doctors I have met with so far seem to want nothing to do with the problem other than try to prescribe me prescription-strength antacids. (Which is obviously just a band-aid approach.)

Anyway, I'll stay off my soapbox for now, but I'll give you an update on my own health story - and the issues I've had with conventional medicine - later this summer. For now, I'll just say that I'm no longer content to just take the drugs, and soon, I plan to talk to someone who will actually start helping me look for the "why."

If you're dealing with your own chronic health problems that just won’t go away, it might be time to look beyond conventional medicine and dive into the world of Functional Medicine. In the latest episode of The Doctor's Farmacy podcast, Dr. Mark Hyman sits down with Dr. Casey Means to unravel the complexities of metabolic health and how it interconnects with our broader societal issues. This episode emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health in a more holistic and effective way. Check it out below!

Welcome to December! It's hard to believe that 2024 is just around the corner...

2023 has been an amazing year as I discussed last week, and we're ready to finish strong! :-)  To kick off the final month of the year, I've got your December freebie ready for you below. It's on a topic that has become very trendy over the past few years, although the technique has been used by humans for centuries for various purposes - both physical and spiritual.

I'm talking, of course, about fasting. While fasting has been used for religious reasons by monks, mystics, and more, in recent years, we have begun to understand that there is a health component to fasting as well. In fact, some laboratory studies have shown greatly increased longevity from restricting eating for certain periods of time. And while it may sound unpleasant, fasting can be easier than you think, and can actually boost your energy and mood and make you feel great!

You're probably not thinking a lot about fasting during this season of eating - after all, the holidays are the time to indulge a little - but this will be a great resource to help you start off the New Year with a cleansing fast, so go ahead and download your copy now, as it's only available for a limited time.

There are billions of dollars made in the supplement industry every year, but do you really need nutritional supplements, or is it all just marketing hype?

If you've ever wondered if supplements are even worth taking, this podcast episode is for you!

In this episode, Functional Medicine doctor Mark Hyman interviews nutritionist, author, and dietary researcher, Chris Kresser, about why supplements may be of value in supporting a healthy lifestyle.

You'll learn why people don't actually get the same amount of nutrients from food today as our ancestors did, why we may not be absorbing enough nutrients from the healthy foods that we do eat, why a global food system is harming our health, why today's recommended daily amounts (RDAs) of nutrients are woefully inadequate, and more.

You'll also learn about nutrient synergy, signs of deficiencies, whether you should worry about nutrient toxicity, so be sure to check it out and watch below!

Cancer-fighting foods
Cancer is one of the most feared modern diseases - and with good reason. Many of us feel that cancer is a frightening and inexplicable illness that can strike without warning - even if we think we're doing all the right things and living a healthy lifestyle. We often feel that cancer is the result of mysterious forces beyond our control. And while in some cases this may be true, it is also true that there are MANY things we can do to help reduce our risk of this dreaded disease.

Diet plays a big role in cancers - both developing and fighting them. For example, sugar is a favorite food of cancer cells, and simply reducing or eliminating this substance from your diet can go a long way towards reducing your risk. However, there are also a number of healthy and immune-supportive foods that can help to prevent cancer, or even stop it in its tracks.

This month's free guide lists 30 healthy and delicious anti-inflammatory foods that have shown promise in fighting cancer. And if you're still healthy, enjoying these foods regularly may help to prevent problems from developing in the future! Learn more and download your copy below...

Fully Vaxxed: Why I Got the COVID-19 Vaccine

5/16/2021

There has been a lot of debate out there in recent years about vaccines, and the COVID-19 vaccine only added fuel to the fire. How safe are vaccines, really? Are they worth getting? Do the long-term benefits outweigh the risks?

While I can't answer these questions for you, I can tell you why I chose to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

First of all, I want to make it clear that I do feel getting vaccinated should be a personal choice. If you choose not to get the vaccine, I'm not judging you! I do think that we aren't always told about all the side effects that may occur from vaccines, and as I have discussed in a previous post, there are plenty of people who would say that they can be much more dangerous than the mainstream medical establishment would have you believe. However, vaccines have also provided untold benefits to human society, and we almost certainly would not be as successful and long-lived as a species without them.

All this to say, I am not an "anti-vaxxer," but I would describe myself as a "responsible vaxxer." (I do think it is completely irresponsible to give a baby with a developing brain of a few months old a cocktail of multiple drugs designed to protect against diseases they likely won't be exposed to for many years, if ever, but that's a discussion for another day.)

As a natural health blogger, a number of people have asked me my thoughts about the COVID vaccine, and while I was initially on the fence, here's why I ultimately decided to get vaccinated.
